Youngmin: “Although we’re the first idols launched from the hip-hop label, Brand New Music, our motif is to show various sides (that aren’t limited to idols) and give a bright energy. Taking a step further would be to grow as an artist who can use their self-composed tracks. When I make beats, rather than have deep musical worries about it, I still try to create songs with what I like and what would make you feel good upon listening to it.”
Donghyun: “If I set myself with the thought of ‘I need to write this song’, then I can never write it. I’m the type to unconsciously hum to myself while holding the guitar and then recording that right away. It comes to me suddenly. I also just like the general idea of writing, making, and singing music (rather than have deep worries). I still have inexperienced areas to worry deeply about areas such as whether or not it’s public-friendly. It’s a process where I naturally write and sing it because I like it.”
Youngmin: “I came to Seoul when I was 20 and prior to being in Brand New Music, I was at RBW for around a year. It was a company with a different musical atmosphere than now. Since I originally liked hip-hop, I applied once I heard at my academy that an idol audition for Brand New Music came up. I originally wanted to become an idol singer. The reason why I first dreamed of becoming a singer was because of dancing, and then I naturally liked the genre of hip-hop as well. In the future, I want to become a singer who may be an idol, but shows great works just like my seniors.”
Donghyun: “I dreamed of becoming a singer since my 2nd year of middle school. I started out through a band. After practicing at JYP Entertainment when I was 17, I started to prepare for my entrance exams and then entered Brand New Music when I was 19. And then I participated in ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ and am now doing MXM. To be honest, at first, I wanted to be a soloist or be part of an indie band. Even when I auditioned for JYP, I didn’t dance. Since I was at the level of squirming my body… To be honest, I wasn’t someone who danced before and after going into an idol company, the trainee life was difficult. However, while being a trainee at JYP, I was able to look at music with a larger view. I also felt the charms to the job of an idol.”
Youngmin: “Ever since our trainee days, Donghyun and I took the same route home and we naturally ended up spending more time together as two. I believe this to be fate. MXM was sudden too! There weren’t any plans that the members who got eliminated from ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ would promote as MXM. If our CEO thought that our images didn’t suit each other, he probably wouldn’t have created MXM. I probably would have gone back to being a trainee after ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ then, right?”
Donghyun: “There really was no plan B after being eliminated from ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. I got eliminated before Hyung too.”
Youngmin: “To be honest, if there was anyone of us who debuted through Wanna One, we all had the resolution to go back as trainees while waiting for them. For me, I debated a lot while participating on ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. Age was a problem too. There was a time when my older brother told me, ‘If you continue to keep trying and it doesn’t work out at a certain age, don’t you think you should look for another path’, but that was right before ‘Produce 101 Season 2’. Since I said that I wasn’t going to university and wanted to become a singer, I think my older brother was worried. So I was determined to try till 24 or 25, and even when I went on ‘Produce 101 Season 2’, I had the resolution set that ‘If it really doesn’t work out this time, I don’t think I’ll be able to do this’.”
Donghyun: “But after actually participating on ‘Produce 101 Season 2’, there were a lot of areas I learned about and was able to create relationships with people I was meeting for the first time, so it was good. Prior to appearing (on the show), my abilities and confidence levels were low. After it was over, I thought that it was good that I went on. But if I was told to go on it again (laughter), I think it would feel like reenlisting.”
With ‘Good Day’ and ‘I’m The One’ as their start, Lim Youngmin and Donghyun continue to show their energetic boyish feels through their 2nd mini album title track, ‘Diamond Girl’, which was released on the 10th. To their boyish concept, they commented that it’s “really burdening” and that they have to go through a practice process for their expressions and movements in order to become a true handsome boy.
Donghyun: “We practiced how to just make facial expressions by zooming in (on our faces) with just the song turned on. Just looking at it gives me chills. We’ll never reveal it and it’s also not polite to our fans to reveal it.”
But still, MXM cannot give up that ‘hip-hop swag’. The two introduced their role models as a unit.
Youngmin: “I really watched a lot of GD&TOP seniors’ performances. Their gestures, expressions, and cool sides. Rather than imitate that, I was able to create an aspiration to become like that as well.”
Donghyun: “VIXX LR seniors. The way their choreography flows with the music, their expressions, and stares are all good, so I thought that that’s how a duo should be done.”
The hip-hop style that they don’t want to let go of. It made me think of ‘Hollywood’, which was revealed through the company evaluation performance during the 1st episode of ‘Produce 101’. It made me want to see Lim Youngmin and Kim Donghyun dancing on a strong beat and having fun.
Youngmin: “I like Block B seniors. Liking their music is a given, but each of the members’ colors are distinct too. The Brand New Boys also all have different charms. The bubbly atmosphere we show now is only a part of us. Hip-hop for me and acoustic for Donghyun. Through this, we can show a variety of emotions. We’re also definitely thinking about songs like ‘Hollywood’. The only thing is that we received a lot of love through ‘Produce 101 Season 2’, so we have a large desire to give back to that love through a bright energy.”
Donghyun: “Also, choreography-wise, it was a bit regrettable for the last album. Since it’s just the two of us, there was a limit to how much we could do for the formation. That’s why we made up for it a bit more in ‘Diamond Girl’. It become fuller performance-wise and the composition will be clearly set. The topic is love and because we want to give back to the love we’ve received from fans, it’s a song that was written like a confession, so please look forward to it.”
